If you're creating your family tree or you're just curious about certain relatives, browsing public records could fill in many of the blanks and reveal crucial details about people that you did not previously know. Among these matters of record are public birth records, which are documented by local councils to validate the name, birthplace and other details of new citizens.

Birth records can provide many key details about people that can remain relevant throughout their lives, such as the names and occupations of both parents (including the mother's maiden name) and the person's full given name at birth, as well as their birth date. Such important details may be needed for various reasons, from applying for a job or studying to emigrating abroad, or even simply proving someone's identity.

Because birth records are handled at a local council level, records are usually stored locally too - but with the internet, it's now possible to browse such records wherever you happen to be, simply by signing up with a genealogy company that offers access to public documents. That being said however, some information available on birth certificates, such as parent's names and occupations, are not available on online birth records. With such a wealth of information at your fingertips, you could gain a head start on your genealogy search.

This makes it a great deal easier to search through birth records today than it was even a few years ago, when browsing was an entirely manual process. Now, family researchers can view and search through digitised birth records as easily as opening up a web page, instead of having to trawl through paper documents looking for certain names.

In some cases, you may even wish to search for your own birth certificate, particularly if the document has become lost and you need a replacement. Some people may never have seen their birth records themselves, and may be curious to discover the information they contain.

In addition to birth records, you may also be able to browse other public records that provide more important details about individuals throughout their lives - from marriage records to certificates of death. If you're researching your ancestors for a family tree, it's therefore possible to find out the precise details of where they began and where they ended up, which can make it a great deal easier to fill in the details in-between. Other public records could prove helpful in your search too, such as censuses.
